Digital Health Webinar Series: From Promise to Practice
The WONCA Working Party on Digital Health invites family doctors and colleagues to the third webinar in its Digital Health series, with Dr Ahmed Alboksmaty and Dr Liliana Laranjo.
In this session, Ahmed Alboksmaty and Liliana Laranjo look at how digital tools and AI can move from promise to everyday practice in primary care. They will explore how technologies like conversational AI, ambient voice tools, and patient-facing apps can support more patient-centred care, while being clear-eyed about the risks around safety, accuracy, and equity. The session offers a practical, evidence-based view of what works, what to watch for, and how primary care can help shape the responsible use of AI to empower patients.

Dr Ahmed Alboksmaty (Egypt)
Ahmed Alboksmaty is a Clinical Research Fellow and PhD Candidate at the Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College London, and an Academic Senior GP Registrar in the East of England. He has more than a decade of experience in health system development and innovation, and has worked with Imperial College London, the University of Cambridge, UNHCR-led programmes, Primary Care International, and the World Health Organization as a consultant in quality and patient safety.
His current research focuses on artificial intelligence in primary care, including AI-enabled ambient voice technology and AI scribes for clinical documentation, virtual and remote consultations, and how these digital tools affect the quality, safety, and human connection at the heart of the GP and patient relationship. His work brings together frontline general practice, global health, and patient safety to ask how emerging technology can genuinely support both clinicians and the people they care for.
Dr Liliana Laranjo (Australia)
Dr Liliana Laranjo (MD, MPH, PhD) is Associate Professor of Digital Health and Sydney Horizon Fellow at the University of Sydney, Australia. She trained as a General Practitioner in Portugal, holds a Master of Public Health from Harvard University, and a PhD in Digital Health. She leads the Digital Health Stream at the Westmead Applied Research Centre, an Impact Centre of the University of Sydney, where she coordinates clinical trials and leads multidisciplinary teams across medicine, health, data science, and engineering.
Her research focuses on using AI and digital health tools to empower and support patients in their health journeys, with the aim of preventing chronic disease at scale in the community. She is a former Chair of the WONCA Working Party on Digital Health and editor of the WONCA book Digital Health for Primary Care.

Dr Hüsna Sarıca Çevik (Türkiye)
Hüsna Sarıca Çevik, M.D., is a family physician and Associate Professor of Family Medicine at Ankara University School of Medicine, Türkiye. She is currently a Visiting Professor at Western University, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Department of Family Medicine, Canada, where she works on patient-centred clinical method, the natural history of symptoms in family practice, and digital health. She serves as an Executive Board member and leads the Training and Capacity Building Workstream of the WONCA Working Party on Digital Health. She has also represented WONCA Europe in several EU-funded HPV projects. Her research additionally focuses on HPV and vaccine communication, women's health, health literacy, and mental health.
Dr Ana Luísa Neves (Portugal/UK)
Ana Luísa Neves is a Clinical Associate Professor in Digital Health and Director of the Global Digital Health Unit at Imperial College, where she leads a team of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, and a practising General Practitioner in London, UK. She is the Chair of the WONCA Working Party on Digital Health. Her research interests focus on the use of digital technologies to deliver safer, more effective, and patient-centred care.
