Strengthening care for older adults: IAGG e-TRIGGER AFMEE 2026–2027

Family doctors play a central role in helping older people maintain their health, independence and quality of life. From managing acute illness and persistent pain to supporting carers and recovery, many of the challenges of ageing are part of everyday family medicine.

The IAGG e-TRIGGER AFMEE Online Training in Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology offers an opportunity to deepen this knowledge and learn alongside colleagues across Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Applications are open for the 2026–2027 cohort, starting on 19 November 2026.

Why might family doctors take part?

The programme covers topics relevant to care in the community, including healthy ageing, caregiver support, pain, rehabilitation and sleep. Case discussions, scientific papers and multidisciplinary team activities provide opportunities to connect learning with practice, develop leadership skills and build an international professional network.

Who can apply?

The programme welcomes physicians and physicians in training, medical students, other healthcare professionals involved in the care of older adults, and academic, clinical and community leaders. It also suits professionals who do not have access to specialised teaching in geriatrics and gerontology at their institution.

How the programme works

  • 12 monthly online sessions, led by international experts.
  • Three hours per session: Thursdays, 14:00–17:00 CET/CEST (Central European time, with seasonal clock changes).
  • Recorded sessions available for later viewing if you cannot attend live.
  • Interactive learning: real-world cases, annotated scientific papers and regional team activities with trainees in your language.
  • Assessment: session quizzes and a final exam (quiz); tutors also consider active participation in live sessions.

Participants who successfully complete 10 of the 12 course quizzes plus the final exam can earn an IAGG World certificate recognising 60 hours of training. This includes 36 hours of lectures, team activities, article-based learning and self-directed study.
