José M Valderas

Dr. José M (Chema) Valderas

I was born in Barcelona, where I trained in Medicine, Family Medicine, Public Health (MPH) and Health Services Research (PhD). I have worked as a Family Doctor in Spain and the UK, where I received a Clinical Excellence Award for contributions to the NHS.

I have lived and held academic positions (H-Index 67) in Spain (Hospital del Mar), US (Johns Hopkins), UK (Manchester/Oxford/Exeter/London School Economics), Australia (Sydney), and since 2022 in Singapore, where I live with my wife and three daughters, and where I am a Professor of Medicine, Head of the Department of Family Medicine and Director of the Centre for Research in Health Systems Performance (National University of Singapore).

I have conducted WHO work in Paraguay, Turkey, Mauritius, Ghana and Zambia and the European Observatory of Health Policies and Systems. I am founding Chief Editor of Frontiers Health Services (IF 2.7) and past President of the International Society for Quality of Life Research.

I have membership of WONCA as Direct Member and through SEMFyC (Spain) and CFPS (Singapore). I was Associate Editor for WONCA European Journal of General Practice (2010–2018), current WP Quality & Safety chairman (2021–2025) and have been recently elected by peers as chairman of WP in Research.
