Welcome Message
The Philippines has been steadfast in contributing towards the global advancement of family medicine, having previously hosted WONCA conferences in 1979 and 1993 in Manila, and in 2011 in Cebu. In 2026, the country proudly continues this commitment by hosting the WONCA Asia-Pacific Regional Conference in Iloilo.
The theme, “Family Physicians are Gifted to Give”, reflects the Filipino identity rooted in Paglingap – the warm care and empathy that Filipinos are known for around the world. This cultural value empowers Filipino family physicians to deliver compassionate, person-centered, family-focused, and community-oriented care – a legacy inspired by Dr. Zorayda Leopando, a pioneer in Filipino family medicine.
Filipino culture sees others as Kapwa – a reflection of oneself. This cultural lens promotes deep, meaningful care and connection with others. The term Ginhawa represents wellbeing and healing, particularly within the home and family. Meanwhile, the spirit of Bayanihan – communal unity and cooperation – inspires family physicians to serve even the most vulnerable and remote communities with dedication and heart.
In 2026, the WONCA Asia-Pacific Regional Conference arrives in the heart of the Philippines. Filipino family physicians are proud to share the values of paglingap, kapwa, ginhawa, and bayanihan with the world, and promote care that is truly person-centered, family-focused, and community-oriented.
