Background

The Donald Li YDM Scholarship aims to enhance access to the WONCA World Conference for young doctors from low- and middle-income countries. By providing financial support for conference registration, travel, visa costs, and accommodation, this scholarship empowers emerging healthcare professionals to engage in vital discussions, share knowledge, and expand their networks. Through this scholarship, we strive to strengthen the global primary care workforce and foster the professional development of future leaders in healthcare.

Three successful applicants will receive a $2500 USD bursary each to the WONCA World Conference 2025 in Lisbon.

Requirements for Applicants

  • Must come from a country listed as a low/middle-income economy under the World Bank classification.
  • Must fulfill the definition of Young Doctor under YDM operational guidelines (those in family medicine training or in the first five years of family medicine practice).
  • Must be an active member of the regional Young Doctor Movement and get a supporting letter from the regional YDM lead.
  • Must demonstrate strong enthusiasm and dedication to participate in the WONCA World Conference and contribute to the development of primary care and family medicine.
  • Upon completion of the conference, awardees will be required to submit a 500-word report to the YDM committee.

Dr. Donald Li

Dr. Donald Li is a specialist in Family Medicine and private practice in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Shanghai. He is the Chairman of Elderly Commission and Censor of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians. Dr. Li is a Past President of the World Organisation of Family Doctors (WONCA) and Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. He is an Honorary Clinical Professor in Family Medicine and Primary Care at The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, as well as an Honorary Professor at Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University. He is a registered Mainland China medical practitioner and has contributed to the training and development of family medicine in mainland China for over twenty years. He advises and serves as director on listed companies associated with medical health and welfare. Dr. Li is an active member of many Hong Kong governmental, non-governmental, and public health bodies.

  • A supporting letter from the regional YDM lead.
  • Two reference letters from any individual who knows your character and potential (e.g., mentor, colleague, teacher).
