Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ungan

Candidate for WONCA President-Elect 2025

Professor of Family Medicine at Ankara University in Türkiye, Prof Ungan is one of the most respected international voices in the field. With 35+ years of leadership in clinical care, education, and global health diplomacy, he has dedicated his career to building academic FM and strengthening primary care (PC) systems worldwide.

His leadership journey includes:

  • President of WONCA-Europe (2019–2021), EGPRN (2016–2019)
  • Co-Chair of the Scientific Committee for the 2025 WONCA Conference in Lisbon & 2015 Istanbul
  • President of the Turkish Association (TAHUD)

He has worked with WHO-Europe, EMA, European Cancer Organization, EU4Health projects. Lead PROTECT-EUROPE, promoting gender-neutral HPV vaccination.

Author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications, with impact in PC development, policy, patient empowerment, health literacy, migrant/refugee health, immunization, prevention, screening, mental health, and burnout among family doctors. His academic and advocacy work have earned recognition across Europe and globally. He received the Katharina von Quensberg Award from the RCGP (UK).

Beyond academia, Prof. Ungan co-founded practices in Ankara and Istanbul, in partnership with UN, CDC, IOM, and ICMC. He also funds scholarships for earthquake-affected youth.

He is married to Handan, also a Family Medicine Specialist. Their daughter, Nazlı, is an attorney in New York; son Efe is a physician.
