Prof María Pilar Astier-Peña 

Prof María Pilar Astier-Peña works as a family doctor in a Health Centre in Zaragoza (Spain) and permanent professor at the University of Zaragoza.

She teaches medical students on improving clinical reasoning as a strategy to reduce diagnostic errors and improve professionalism and clinical ethics. She is also mentor of family medicine residents in her health centre. She has been the chair of the patient safety working party of the Spanish Society for Family and Community Medicine (SEMFYC) since 2012.

In WONCA, she served as chair of the WONCA Working Party on Quality and Safety in Family Medicine from 2016 to 2021. She is also member of the WONCA European Working Party on Quality and Safety (EQUIP) since 2016. She is the vice-chair of the Wonca Europe Working Party on Policy Advocacy since 2023 and belongs to the research group EURODATA from EGPRN since its onset.

Prof Astier was elected member at large of the WONCA Executive Committee in 2021. She served as membership committee chair, and again in 2023, when she served as WONCA-WHO liaison officer. In 2025, she was elected WONCA President-Elect for the 2025-2027 term and will serves as President for the 2027-2029 biennium.

Her main research topics are patient safety and healthcare quality in primary care, policy advocacy in family medicine, improving clinical reasoning in primary care and doctors health and well-being. ORCID number: 0000-0002-3192-7672.

Prof Astier-Peña is married and mother of 3 children. She enjoys outdoor sports, travelling, reading and dancing.
