Social Prescribing in Primary Care

Social prescribing is “a structured and supported way for health and care professionals to connect people to community-based sources of support to improve health and wellbeing.” In primary care, it offers a holistic complement to clinical treatment—allowing patients to engage in meaningful activities like volunteering, gardening, and social groups that support long-term recovery and mental health.

This is especially valuable for cancer patients in recovery, who often need more than medical care. Community-based rehabilitation fosters physical strength, emotional resilience, and social connection.

WONCA and the SPACE Project

WONCA is a proud partner in the SPACE Project (Social Prescribing for Active Civic Engagement), an EU-funded initiative exploring how volunteering and civic engagement can support rehabilitation in primary care. As part of this work, WONCA—through its Special Interest Groups and regional collaboration with WONCA Europe—is helping ensure that the voice of family doctors and the strength of primary care systems are central to this innovative effort.

The project was developed with the aim of building capacities in the health and voluntary sectors to offer social prescribing in urban gardens. Based on research and our own observation, social prescribing can be a useful tool in a holisitic approach to rehabilitation, particularly in the context of recovery from cancer.
