Two Projects Selected for WONCA Project Labs

WONCA is pleased to announce the two projects selected for development through our new WONCA Project Labs initiative. These projects were chosen for their collaborative spirit, relevance to primary care, and potential to grow into fundable, high-impact programmes.

The WONCA Project Labs were created to support Working Parties (WPs) and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in transforming bold ideas into full project proposals, ready for submission to external funders. With generous support from the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), and drawing on the success of the Collaborative Fund, this initiative aims to strengthen systems within family medicine worldwide.

More than a competition, the Labs are a shared learning process. The two selected projects will work closely with the WONCA Secretariat and external partners, to refine their ideas and build viable project plans by the end of November. Cross-group collaboration is a central pillar: the selected proposals bring together multiple WPs and SIGs, with further partnerships expected to grow in the months ahead.

We extend our sincere thanks to all WPs and SIGs who submitted proposals. Your creativity and commitment continue to push family medicine forward.

Selected Projects

Developing Clinical Ethics Support for Primary Care

This project aims to equip family doctors with the tools and structures they need to navigate the ethical challenges of everyday practice. Through global research, tailored educational modules, and the creation of peer reflection groups, it will build capacity and reduce moral distress among clinicians. A ‘hub and spoke’ model will also be explored to establish sustainable ethics support networks in primary care.

Groups involved:
- WP on Ethics and Professionalism
- WP on Education
- WP on Quality and Safety
- SIG on Policy and Advocacy
- SIG on Family Violence
- SIG on Emergency Medicine

Promoting Rational Medicine Prescribing in Primary Care (PROSPER)

Focusing on Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa, PROSPER will support the adoption of the WHO Guide to Good Prescribing in medical education and training. The project includes evidence reviews, capacity-building webinars, and an implementation study in medical schools. It promotes safer, more effective prescribing practices while fostering South-South collaboration and local ownership.

Groups involved:
- WP on Research
- WP on Quality and Safety
- External partners: Ghent University, PRIMAFAMED, ISDB

The WONCA secretariat will work closely with both project leads to develop funding proposals and seek creative ways to support these initiatives. We are excited to help bring these ideas to life.

Together, by harnessing the expertise of our global community, we can advance family medicine for the benefit of patients and providers everywhere.
