Prof Rich Withnall (UK), Convener of the WONCA Special Interest Group on Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine provides the group's annual report fro 2016-2017 and reprots on a phenomenal growth in membership.

August, 2017

In October 2016, WONCA World Council approved the creation of the Special Interest Group on Quaternary Prevention and Overmedicalization. Our Biennium Plan 2017-2018 was submitted on February 2017. Therefore, this report refers to a short period and we are working towards these objectives.

A workshop titled ‘Point-of-Care Testing for Today’s Family Doctor: Innovations and Applications’ was presented on behalf of the WONCA Special Interest Group on Point-of-Care Testing at the 14th WONCA World Rural Health Conference in Cairns, Australia from 29th April – 2nd May 2017.

The new WONCA Special Interest Group (SIG) on Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) has participated in the 2016 Conference in Rio de Janeiro with different activities. Convenor, Dr Domingo Orozco-Beltran reports.

The Rio pre-conference of the WONCA SIG on Cancer and Palliative care attracted a large group, including many Brazilians eager to hear about palliative care in the community internationally.

At the Rio conference several new WONCA Special Interest Groups (SIGs) were announced. This month we feature the convenors of two of these, namely Dr Victor Ng of Canada (SIG on Emergency Medicine) and Dr Miguel Pizzanelli of Uruguay (SIG on Quaternary Prevention and Overmedicalization).
