PHCFM webinar for peer reviewers

Prof Bob Mash, Editor-in-Chief of the open-access African Journal of Primary Health Care & Family Medicine (PHCFM), WONCA Africa Region President and Chair of the WONCA World Conference in Cape Town 2027, invites peer reviewers to a live webinar on 28 July 2026, 15:00 to 17:00 CAT.

The session is co-hosted by Dr Innocent Besigye, Prof Doreen Kaura and Ms Sumana Dhanani. This CPD-accredited webinar is designed to build reviewing capacity and deepen understanding of the journal's approach.

Who should attend

The webinar is aimed at anyone who reviews, or would like to review, for PHCFM. This includes established peer reviewers looking to sharpen their practice, family physicians and primary care researchers who want to take on reviewing for the first time, and doctoral or early-career researchers seeking to understand how the journal assesses submissions. Members of the wider African primary care and family medicine community with an interest in strengthening the region's research base are also welcome.

Why it matters

Prof Mash has written consistently on the need to grow primary care research in Africa. In the journal's series on building the next generation of family medicine and primary health care researchers, he and colleagues set out the case for expanding the pool of researchers on a continent that produces only a small share of global health research. He has also argued, in a 2025 editorial on advocacy for family medicine in sub-Saharan Africa, that a stronger evidence base is central to making the case for primary care to health systems and policymakers.

Peer review sits at the heart of that work. A larger, better-supported body of reviewers helps the journal maintain quality, publish more research from across the region, and support the clinicians and academics whose work strengthens primary care. This webinar is a practical step towards that goal.
